Artist Spotlight: DJ Big Rome

Written by

DJ-Big-Rome

I crossed paths with many ambitious rappers in my life, many hip-hop fanatics in many forms. Talk about B-Boys, spray painters, music collectors and most important to the game, disc jockeys. One thing remained common, especially amongst the male species, is the arrogance, coupled with the lack of skill. This was until I met a much talented, soft spoken young man by the name of Romeo Chueu.
The 28 year old is a self-taught Disc Jockey from Soshanguve, in the CapCity (Pretoria), better known by his stage name, DJ Big Rome. The Chueu Records owner has been in the entertainment industry for a solid11 years now, holding gigs such as Club Manager, Artist Management and has been a DJ since 2009.
The CapCity Award nominee is a co-founder of the then prolific rap group, Blood Spillaz (now known only as The Spillaz) which caused major havoc in the Pretoria streets. This is the same crew that graduated the likes of the SAHHA nominated Lection and the self-proclaimed Prince of CapCity, Lil TK. This seemed to be a good investment of his time as he learned the business side of the industry, the skill he uses to run his stable today.

It was in 2006 when DJ Big Rome felt his time is coming as he received props in and around CapCity with his talent on the decks. He since have deejay'ed for talented artists like Motso,Towdee Mac from Morafe,FlexBoogie,Sfuba,Bugzito, Ras, Spilaz,Green,Adrenaline,Trouble Makers,&Stan B and also sharinga stage with the likes of Khuli Chana,Teargas, PRO,HHP, AKA, Tumi,Zubz,&Tuks amongst others. He also was a resident deejay at CapCity's biggest hip-hop movement, The Stage Nites.
In the last few years DJ Big Rome was able to score interview publications on prints such as HYPE Magazine, Daily Sun, and Tshwane Sun. In the summer of 2012, DJ Big Rome teamed up with the sensational Motso of Nu-Gen, an artist he met during his days performing at Stage Nites, and dropped a hit single titled 'Cold Word' which was warmly received."Cold World had a great reception, people were going crazy over the song. People did not expect me to drop a track like cold world" said DJ Big Rome. This emotionally provoking, yet classical, song talks about how guys take girls for granted, wanting them only for sex and no emotions attached. The honesty of the lyrics from Motso speaks volume and touches hearts. The track was co-produced by Eccentrix.

A great man destined for stardom, DJ Big Rome is the realest and the most patient hustler. "I like his way of thinking and putting together ideas. A man who thinks out the box is how I'd like to call him. He is hands on as well, not like many of this well-known DJ's who leaves everything up to the artist. He wants to know. He wants to do. He wants to have an input and learn what he does not understand. That's a special gift to have" added a good friend, Motso.

After years of perfecting skills, turning tables, scratching discs, DJ Big Rome took a leaf in a book written by the likes of DJ Khalid and DJ Hammer and is ready to drop a mixtape titled "CapCity the Callin' by DJ Big Rome".The star-studded mixtape will feature the likes of FlexBoogie, Lyrical Eye, Skillo, Miss Melo, Mrakes, Champ, and Motso amongst others.
As he awaits his moment, the humble gentleman looks to see if his hard work will pay off with the tape as he looks to feed the streets with "hits for days" and live up to hispromise that"people a going to love it (the mixtape)".
Motso's Words about DJ Big Rome:
I think big homie is set for greatness, as long as he keeps his eye on de ball and not get distracted by some of these hating dudes he will be caking very soon. I personally don't have a lot of patience but when you're rolling with a homie like B.I.G [sic] you bound to have all the patience in the world. He is very ambitious and what he wants he gets. I actually met Rome a year or two back on the opening show off State Theatre's Stage Nites where I and the team (Nu Gen) were performing. We spoke a bit and from there forth we started sharing ideas and talking projects.
A great man once said "if we both got an apple each and we exchange them we will both still be left with an apple each at the end of the day. But if we both got an idea each and we exchange them between one another we will both have two ideas each" and I think that's how work between the two brands started. My word is the streets better look out for Cap City's finest DJ. He is dropping something for the streets pretty soon, working hand in hand with hardest working team, @NuGenTMB. Ain't none nice in the streets but my boy B.I.G [sic] right now. So go ahead and salute that brother for his hard work.
