South African Hip Hop Pioneers and oldest Hip Hop group - Black Noise was formed from the original breakdancers/ b-boys from 1982. Black Noise Initially started MC´ing as part of the amalgamated b-boy crew called Furious Floor Rockers in 1985/6. The name then changed to The Chill Convention and Black Noise was formed in 1988. Black Noise was formed from members of the b-boy crews like, Pop Glide Crew, Supreme Team, Ballistic Rock and Jam Rock Crew.
They were South Africa’s fist all elements Hip Hop Group, i.e. DJ, MCs, B-boys, Graffiti Artists and Hip Hop Activists. Black Noise was the first South African Hip Hop Group to record, press and tour its own CD nationally and internationally. Emile YX?, one of the groups founding members, with the help of Black Noise, has created many community outreach projects like African Battle Cry, Battle of the Year South Africa, African Hip Hop Indaba, Freestyle Session South Africa, Shut Up Just Dance, Up the Rock, Cape Flats Uprising, Positive Poster Day and sent more than 100 b-boys to the World Breakdance Champs in Germany, etc. Through these events and national touring, Black Noise has created thousands of new Hip Hop activists throughout South Africa and the world.
Black Noise perceives themselves as an 'Old School' hip hop band. Being active members of the South African branch of Afrika Bambataa's Universal Zulu Nation also shows their understanding of 'real hip hop'. Organist ion of South Africa's annual Battle of the Year contest and the publishing of South Africa's only hip hop magazine "Da Juice", is mostly done by the oldest member of Black Noise, Emile XY?, with help from the others. Black Noise is involved in a lot of activities of social nature. They give work shops in community centres, libraries and prisons and tour schools to give their insight of South Africa from a more African perspective. To help on overcoming the after effects of the Apartheid is one of their major tasks.
Black Noise have shared stages with artists like Robbie Jansen, Hugh Masakela, Basil Manenberg Coetzee, Brenda Fassie, Prophets of Da City, Black Thought of The Roots, K’naan, Snoop Doggy Dog, Brasse Vannie Kaap, Joe, Duran Duran, Sean Paul, Talib Kweli and many more. Black Noise is self managed and toured Sweden, Norway, Belgium, USA, Holland, Denmark, Finland, Zimbabwe, Namibia, England, Germany and Ireland.
Legendary South African Hip Hop Group Black Noise, of which Emile Jansen is a founding member, recently celebrated their 22nd anniversary at the Baxter Theatre. Over the years, Black Noise had to deal with many challenges and member changes, but the anniversary celebrates the fact that they're still going strong.
Emile Jansen hails from Grassy Park, he started his career as a teacher which helped him form various community developmental projects.
Because of his socially conscious hip hop ideology, Emile Jansen has produced documentaries, written flyers, manuals, even a B-boy syllabus for the Heal the Hood group, in documenting the evolution of the hip hop movement.
Emile Jansen is presently recording a solo album and working on a documentary, titled From B-Boys to Being Men. The group will do a 10-leg Cape Flats Uprising Hip Hop tour of the Western Cape that will target mostly schools.
Black Noise have recently completed their latest album called ‘Stone Garden Soldiers’ which will be released into stores by their record label Clearsky Records at the end of March 2010.
